The draw for the revamped 2024/25 Champions League ‘League Phase’ has been made, with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich learning their fate.

This season’s competition will look rather different than in years past, with the group stage scrapped in favour of one 36-team League Phase.

With every team now playing two extra group matches, this phase of the tournament will also stretch into the new year.

Read on for every team’s Champions League fixtures, as well as what’s in store with the new format.

New Champions League format

As mentioned, the Champions League has been revamped this season. Instead of the traditional 32 teams split into eight groups of four, there’s now a single 36-team table, referred to as the ‘league phase’.

Teams will no longer play three opponents twice. Instead, each club will face eight different teams, with four home matches and four away.

To make the draw, teams were sorted into four seeding pots, and each club was drawn to play two opponents from each pot, with one game per pot at home and the other away.

The top eight teams from this league phase will automatically advance to the last 16, while teams ranked ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff round for the remaining spots.

Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated from European competition entirely, rather than moving to the Europa League as has happened in previous seasons for teams finishing third in the group stage.

From the last-16 onward, the knockout rounds will proceed as normal.

Arsenal ace, Eddie Nketiah, is expected to sign for Crystal Palace before Friday night’s transfer deadline, but that particular deal is already causing a knock-on effect at Selhurst Park.

What his arrival would effectively mean, is that one of the Eagles current strikers would have to be moved on.

According to well-placed CaughtOffside sources, the likelihood of French striker, Odsonne Edouard, therefore being the fall guy is strong.

It’s understood that representatives from both Atalanta and Edouard’s former club, Celtic, have met with the player’s agent to discuss a potential move.

Nketiah arrival could see Odsonne Edouard depart

Although sources have advanced that Oliver Glasner is determined to keep hold of the player past the transfer deadline – and is believed to have offered him a new three-year deal with an option for a further year to stop him leaving for free when his current deal expires in a year’s time – the fact is that Edouard will fall well down the pecking order upon Nketiah’s arrival.

If an acceptable deal isn’t forthcoming by Friday night, discussions are likely to continue between Palace and the player in order to persuade him to sign a new deal.

He will have the choice to do exactly that of course, or to stick things out and then be able to talk to other clubs in January with a view to a free transfer next summer.

At this late stage, Glasner will surely prefer that there’s not too much upheaval for the South London outfit, particularly when you consider that they’ve already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich and there’s still every chance that Marc Guehi moves to Newcastle by the weekend.

After being left off of the squad list for Arsenal’s recent pre-season game against Bayer Leverkusen, it was felt that Kieran Tierney no longer had a future in North London, and though six clubs are chasing his signature, he could still stay with the Gunners.

The Gunners are certainly aware that offers for the player will come in before the summer transfer window closes, however, CaughtOffside sources understand that Arsenal have not yet made a definite decision regarding Tierney’s future.

Indeed, sources indicate that Mikel Arteta wants Tierney to stay with the team and play an important role next season.

Six clubs chasing Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney

The issue and sticking point to that precise scenario occurring is Tierney’s desire to leave during the window due to his lack of regular first-team appearances to date.

At this moment, CaughtOffside sources have noted confirmed interest in the player from his former club Celtic, as well as Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Aston Villa, and Spanish top-flight sides Girona, Sevilla and Valencia.

Kieran Tierney's future at Arsenal is in doubt with six clubs chasing his signature.
Kieran Tierney’s future at Arsenal is in doubt with six clubs chasing his signature.

With only a week to go until the transfer window closes, if any of the aforementioned clubs want to make good on their interest, then they need to start thinking about opening negotiations quickly.

Should Arteta accept that there’s no persuading the player to extend his time in North London, it’s believed that an offer of around £25m/£30m will be considered suitable.

The cost saving made should Tierney move on, may also allow Arsenal to enter the market at a late stage to beef up their squad with one or two more purchases.

For now, the player and Arsenal are just sitting and waiting for the phone to ring.

Manchester City are weighing up a move for Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi as they look to replace Julian Alvarez according to The Athletic.

City began their quest for a record extending fifth Premier League title in a row with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Sunday.

It’s been a quiet summer for City with Brazilian winger Savio the only arrival at the club, but it appears there could be a flurry of activity at the Etihad before the window closes.

City weigh up move for Furuhashi

Ilkay Gundogan has sensationally returned to the club after leaving for Barcelona last summer and the midfielder has signed a one year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

With Gundogan’s returned finalised City have turned their attention to searching for a replacement for Alvarez who joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth up to £82m.

The Athletic have reported that City are weighing up a move for Celtic star Kyogo and are looking for a player who is prepared to accept a squad role at the club.

The report adds that Pep Guardiola’s side have narrowed their search down to the 29-year-old and one other young forward.

The Athletic state that Kyogo has caught City’s eye and agreeing personal terms wouldn’t be a problem as the forward is keen make the move.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou signed Kyogo during his time in charge of Celtic with the Scottish champions paying in the region of £4.6m to Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

Kyogo is a versatile player and can play on both wings and through the middle with that versatility likely to be of attraction to Guardiola.

If City do decide to pursue a deal it’s unclear how much Celtic would demand for one of their key players, but they would be in line to make a healthy profit on the player.

Kyogo has made 135 appearances for Celtic, scoring 73 goals and providing 16 assists after arriving at the club in 2021.

With so many of Leeds United’s top talents being sold this summer, it’s clear that Daniel Farke needs to have some balance restored to his squad.

The all whites have begun their 2024/25 Championship campaign in the worst possible fashion, having conceded three goals at home in both of their opening games, to Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.

They were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the latter and could only rescue a point in a 3-3 draw in injury time in the former.

Losing the likes of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville was always going to cause problems unless they were quickly replaced, though it appears that Rangers’ Rabbi Matondo could well be the man to take Summerville’s place.

According to a report from Football Scotland, their sources note that Farke has an interest in the 23-year-old who managed 10 G/A contributions last season, including a goal of the season contender in injury time against Celtic.

With three weeks left until the transfer window closes for business for another few months, Chelsea still have the chance to do business that will afford Enzo Maresca the best opportunity of being able to start his managerial career in West London on the front foot.

The Blues haven’t had the best of times in pre-season, drawing 2-2 with Wrexham and losing 4-1 to Celtic, 4-2 to Man City and 2-1 to Real Madrid.

Their only win thus far (3-0) came against Club America, though the locals have a first chance to see their boys in action with the final pre-season game against Inter taking place at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

Chelsea set to let ‘most promising’ academy star leave

The real business gets underway a week on Sunday when Chelsea face Pep Guardiola’s City side again, with the reigning Premier League champions travelling to West London.

If Maresca can begin his English top-flight campaign with a decent result in that game, it could set the tone.

Behind the scenes, work is still expected in the transfer market, though one decision that the club appears on the verge of making could top the lot.

Chelsea continue to turn their backs on academy talent
Chelsea continue to turn their backs on academy talent

As Football Scotland note, Leo Castledine is one of the most promising players ever to come out of the Chelsea academy, however, the 19-year-old is set to be allowed to make a loan move to Scottish giants, Rangers.

A player who has previously trained under Mauricio Pochettino could be eased out of the club for the 2024/25 season, and whilst it might only be a loan with a view to him returning further down the line, it does beg the question as to why Chelsea themselves can’t see a development pathway for him at the club.

Surely one of the pillars of any club in this day and age is the consistent production of academy graduates.

Bringing them through to the first-team should be a priority above all else, and yet Chelsea under Todd Boehly are turning their backs on their best home grown talent.

Gallagher, Chalobah, Castledine…. who’s next?

Chelsea have been dealt a potentially damaging transfer blow after Brighton and Hove Albion have reportedly begun talks with Celtic over the signing of Matt O’Riley.

After reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid worth £33 million for England international Conor Gallagher, Chelsea were almost immediately linked with signing O’Riley as the midfielder’s direct replacement (Sky Sports).

Brighton open talks to sign Celtic’s Matt O’Riley

However, according to a recent report from Sky Sports News reporter Lyall Thomas, Enzo Maresca could be beaten to the 23-year-old after Brighton took the initiative and started discussions with Celtic over a potential summer transfer.

“Brighton are in talks with Celtic over a deal for Matt O’Riley,” the outlet posted on their live transfer blog.

“They are among a number of clubs keen to sign the midfielder this summer.”

Matt O'Riley is in talks to sign for Brighton.

While Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid has yet to be officially confirmed, with the 24-year-old heading to Spain for a medical, fans are anticipating an announcement sooner rather than later.

As for O’Riley, clearly admired by a host of top clubs, Celtic will fear they’re going into the SPL’s game week two without the help of their number 33.

Scoring 19 goals and registering 18 assists in 49 games in all competitions last season, O’Riley’s contributions will take a lot of replacing.

The Danish midfielder, who was born in London in 2000, has three years left on his contract with the Hoops.

The future of Matt O’Riley at Celtic remains up in the air ahead of the new Premier League season as several English clubs have an interest in the midfielder.

The Denmark international has been with the Scottish Champions since 2022 and is coming off the back of a very impressive 2023/24 campaign, in which he produced 19 goals and 18 assists across 49 games.

O’Riley has a contract at Celtic Park until 2027 but his performances last season have attracted the interest of several clubs in the Premier League.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that West Ham United and Leicester City have shown strong interest in the midfielder; however, both English sides are hesitant about meeting Celtic’s £25m asking price.

Despite this, both teams are prepared to make a move for the 23-year-old and are ready to enter negotiations to try and come to an agreement to sign the player ahead of the new Premier League season getting underway next week.

In addition to West Ham and Leicester, Serie A side Atalanta have made multiple attempts to sign O’Riley, with their latest proposal around the €18m mark. Although Celtic rejected this offer, the Italian club are ready to make another attempt to sign the midfielder.

Could Celtic’s Matt O’Riley replace Conor Gallagher at Chelsea?

Conor Gallagher looks set to leave Chelsea this summer and complete a move to Atletico Madrid as part of a €40m deal.

The Blues could look to replace the English midfielder in their squad before the transfer window shuts and sources have said that O’Riley is being viewed as a potential replacement.

Celtic will continue to demand £25m to part ways with the 23-year-old this summer as it remains to be seen if any of the interested clubs submit an official proposal over the coming weeks.

Chelsea are keen on Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley as they assess potential replacements for Conor Gallagher according to Sky Sports.

The Blues have agreed a fee worth around £34 with Atletico Madrid for the England international, who is expected to give his final answer on Monday.

Gallagher’s future has been a topic of conversation for the last 18 months and it’s been reported that he rejected three offers of a new contract from Chelsea.

O’Riley a potential Gallagher replacement

Chelsea have only offered Gallagher a two year deal with the option of a further 12 months as they have doubts over his suitability for Enzo Maresca’s system.

The new deal would see a pay rise for Gallagher, but he’s believed to want a longer term deal like many of his team-mates have signed.

If Gallagher decides to join Atletico Madrid it remains unclear if Chelsea would go into the market for a replacement given the options they have in the middle of the park.

Matt O'Riley celebrates scoring for Celtic.
O’Riley is attracting interest from a host of clubs this summer.

However, Sky Sports have reported that Celtic midfielder O’Riley is one of several options the Blues are keen on.

O’Riley impressed for Celtic in their 4-1 win over Chelsea in pre-season, and he’s attracted interest from Serie A side Atalanta as well as newly promoted Southampton.

The 23-year-old scored 19 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions for Celtic last season and is under contract with the Scottish Champions until 2027.

It doesn’t make a huge amount of sense for Chelsea to replace Gallagher if he departs given they have already signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and they also have talented youngster Andrey Santos on their books.

Not to mention the club also have Carney Chukwuemeka in the squad so the need for another midfielder seems unnecessary, but Chelsea have done a lot of things in the market that don’t make sense.

If a move for O’Riley were to materialise it would be hard to view it in any other way than just stockpiling talent.

News that Liverpool are open to offers for their left-back will surely rock supporters back on their heels.

The Reds have been amongst the quietest teams so far in the summer transfer window, and arguably players coming into the club should be foremost in the minds of those in charge of the first team.

Liverpool could allow Owen Beck to leave the club this summer

As of this moment, despite any rumours or links, there is a distinct lack of incoming transfer news, with the only piece of potentially confirmed business relating to Owen Beck.

According to Sky Sports, both Celtic and Queens Park Rangers have registered their interest in the left-back, with the former happy to do a permanent deal and the latter aiming for a loan arrangement.

Any deal will not be rubber stamped until Liverpool return from their pre-season tour of the USA, though it isn’t clear exactly how much the Merseysiders will want to receive for his services.

Buying clubs will expect him to be competitively priced given that he’s behind Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas in the pecking order, and former Reds manager, Brendan Rodgers will almost certainly be looking for a favour from his old employers.

From Beck’s own point of view, a permanent move away may well be preferred given that he’s already had a loan spell at Dundee, though his final destination and type of move clearly depends on a number of factors.

With almost a month left of the current window, Liverpool have plenty of time in which to be able to evaluate any offers, and the club have the luxury of being picky given that there’s no apparent need to sell the player at this point.
