Man United had conversations during the summer transfer window to bring Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag had an interest in the Dutch full-back.

The defender’s current deal with the Serie A champions expires in 2025 having spent the last four years in Italy and if any interested party wanted to try and sign the 28-year-old, next year would be the best time to make their move.

Man United have been linked to Dumfries for a while now and according to Matteo Moretto, talks were held over the summer, although they were not serious.

The Manchester club would go on to sign Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich instead and just as well they did as Moretto says that Inter plan to offer Dumfries a new short-term deal in 2025 as the Netherlands international is very popular in the Italian club’s dressing room.

The 28-year-old is said to be happy in Milan and the expectation is that the player will remain at the San Siro beyond his expiring 2025 contract.

Man United set to miss out on Inter’s Denzel Dumfries

Writing in his latest column for CaughtOffside’s The Daily Briefing, Moretto has reported that he expects Dumfries to pen a new deal at Inter despite talks with Man United at the start of the summer.

“Inter star Denzel Dumfries is still out of contract in the summer of 2025, but from what I am aware, the intention is to renew his contract, and Inter are in the process of doing so,” the transfer journalist said. “The fact that he has remained this summer, rather than Inter trying to recoup some money for him is a sure sign that there is a willingness for him to stay.

“The idea is to renew him on a shorter deal though, rather than a four or five-year contract. It could be just a year or maybe more, but not a long-term deal. I’m told he will sign a new deal though, despite the lack of a public announcement.

“Dumfries is very comfortable in Milan and happy. The Dutch international is very much loved in the dressing room at Inter too. There were conversations with Manchester United in the early part of the summer, but they were not serious talks. Nothing was advanced or agreed.”

The latest on free agents and potential transfers

The market remains open for free agents like Adrien Rabiot, who has again said no to Turkish opportunities like Galatasaray in the last 24 hours. There have been many reports, but the fact remains that Rabiot has no plans to go to Turkey as he is waiting for an opportunity in one of the top five leagues.

As of today, Rabiot is also still not opening the doors to clubs from Saudi Arabia either, so Europe remains his priority, and let’s see what happens on that front in the next days.

Meanwhile, another free agent is Memphis Depay and he is expected to complete a move to Corinthians on a two-year deal in the coming days. They are preparing all the documents and finalising the details, then Depay to Corinthians should be a ‘here we go’.

Negotiations are also ongoing over Anthony Martial and a possible move to Flamengo on a free transfer. There’s an interest from Martial, and it now depends on the financial final proposal to get it done. Pedro injured his ACL and Flamengo need a striker, so they immediately got in touch with Martial’s camp to discuss terms. Talks continue.

What’s going on at Chelsea?

There have been many reports about the ownership situation at Chelsea. It’s not really my area, as you know I’m focused on transfers, but what’s being claimed is that there is a risk of a ‘civil war’ between owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. So, what does it mean?

It’s a tense situation as it’s being reported that Boehly and Eghbali both want to buy out the other’s stake in the club to take full ownership. We’ll see how it develops, and I don’t have any fresh information on this issue, but what I can clarify is that on the technical side at Chelsea, the mission remains the same.

The new Chelsea owners have put together a new board, and they are still working on finding the best young talents as we’ve seen from the last few years, with players like Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, as we saw meeting at international level in the game between Brazil and Ecuador, they are the future of Chelsea, and for now the ownership situation is not affecting the transfer strategy or technical project at Stamford Bridge.

So, for today the Chelsea project is absolutely not changing – they are working on the best talents for a long-term project, for the present and future, but of course if this changes I will keep you updated.

Frenkie de Jong linked with Manchester United again

Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona

We once again this summer had many stories about Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona, and there were new links with Manchester United, as we’ve so often seen before.

The latest we’ve heard is that Man United made some contact with De Jong during a moment when they weren’t so sure if the Manuel Ugarte deal was going to happen. However, I can tell you that this summer, the reality is that there was absolutely nothing.

There was zero between De Jong and Man United, because the reality is that De Jong never wanted to leave Barcelona. De Jong is fully focused on Barcelona, and it’s also important to note that he’s too expensive for Man United – his salary is very high and so it was something impossible for United this summer.

We’ll see what happens in the future, but this summer it was also the case that United wanted a different kind of midfielder anyway, more of a defensive midfielder than De Jong. Ugarte was the only option, their top target, and so there was never any possibility to go for De Jong – between United, Ten Hag, De Jong, the player’s agents, there was absolutely zero.

Aurelien Tchouameni Real Madrid exit looks unlikely

Aurelian Tchouameni is a player we know has had admirers in the Premier League in the past before he ended up at Real Madrid, but there have once again been reports about possible interest from Arsenal and Liverpool for summer 2025, so I wanted to clarify something here.

It’s true that two years ago Tchouameni had the opportunity to join Liverpool before then going to Real Madrid. Jurgen Klopp was calling the player on a daily basis, trying to change his mind, but the Frenchman was clear that he only wanted to go to Real Madrid.

As for now, I can guarantee that nothing has changed between Tchouameni and Real Madrid – their relationship is fantastic. Tchouameni is very happy at Real Madrid, and only focused on Real Madrid. Also Real Madrid, the president, manager Carlo Ancelotti, the technical staff, they all love Tchouameni. From what I hear he’s a really professional guy, and popular with his teammates in the dressing room.

So, forget about rumours about Tchouameni – as of now, there is no expectation for him to leave. Of course I can’t predict what can happen in the future, but at the moment the intension is absolutely for Tchouameni and Real Madrid to continue together.

Bayern considered Inter left-back

Federico Dimarco scored a fantastic goal for Italy in their win over France, and in general he continues to be a strong performer for his country, as well as for his club Inter Milan. Although he has a strong relationship with Inter, I can also reveal there as interest in him earlier in the summer.

Although there was never a negotiation, Bayern Munich discussed internally the possibility of moving for Dimarco as they considered replacements at left-back in case Alphonso Davies were to leave the club amid the interest from Real Madrid.

Dimarco was one of the names discussed by Bayern, though not the only one, he was one of three names, but they never ended up making contact with Inter because Davies ended up staying, and also because Dimarco was never going to leave Inter. Their relationship is really strong, they absolutely want to continue together.

Still, Bayern thought about this possibility, and let’s see if they look into it again depending on what happens with Davies next summer. It’s important, however, to say that from Dimarco and Inter’s perspective, there is absolutely no intention to part ways.

The latest on Jamal Musiala’s future

We continue to see stories about Jamal Musiala, which is normal given his superb performances and his current contract situation at Bayern Munich, with his deal due to expire in 2026.

Bayern have been pushing for months to extend Musiala’s contract and this remain one of their main missions. Bayern will insist again with a big proposal; he’s in the list of all the top European clubs, this is very normal, but it all depends on what happens with Bayern in talks.

I can also confirm some other Bayern reports, as Bild have claimed Federico Chiesa was an option for them earlier in the summer, before he ended up joining Liverpool.

Bayern were offered this possibility in June but their top target was always a different kind of player like Olise. Different player, different skills. They appreciated Chiesa but they were not looking for that kind of player.

Thoughts on England as Lee Carsley opens with win

Finally, England had a convincing 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland yesterday, with Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scoring the goals.

Overall I thought it was a very good performance. “Impressed” would probably be a bit too much, as it was a normal game with zero pressure, but still a good performance for sure.

Declan Rice’s development has been great this year, he’s progressed really well at Arsenal and for sure he’s one of the best midfielders around now. He took his goal well and continues to be a key player for England.

On Lee Carsley, I still think it’s a very open race for the manager’s job and nothing is decided yet for the permanent job.

Arsenal are confident of succeeding in signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in summer 2025 despite missing out on him in the summer just gone, CaughtOffside understands.

The Slovenia international is an exciting young talent who has attracted strong interest from Arsenal, but also from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, though he opted to sign a new contract with Leipzig this summer instead, though a departure could finally happen for him next year.

Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Arsenal remain keen on Sesko and optimistic about luring him to the Emirates Stadium, with some contacts already taking place ahead of next summer in order to try to steal a march on their rivals.

In case Arsenal can’t land the 21-year-old, it is also understood that there is a growing appreciation for Inter Milan’s in-form forward Marcus Thuram inside the north London club.

Benjamin Sesko to Arsenal next summer?

Sesko or Thuram to Arsenal?

Sesko makes sense as Arsenal’s number one target, as he would be an ideal option for the present and the future, though Thuram could also be a decent option, even if only for a few years as he’s now 27 years of age.

The Frenchman has been in superb form for Inter, however, and it’s understood that he’s made Arsenal take notice, though no contact has yet been made and it remains to be seen if there’s much realistic prospect of him leaving the San Siro.

Sesko may be the more realistic option as this fine young player probably won’t be planning to stay at Leipzig for too long, even if he did technically sign a new contract until 2029.

Arsenal fans would surely be happy with Sesko or Thuram joining, and many fans will be frustrated that a new striker couldn’t have been brought in for this season, as it seems a bit of a risk to be relying on Gabriel Jesus as the only alternative to Kai Havertz.

It’s that time of year when the nominations for the Ballon d’Or are announced, and this year saw a real shock.

For the first time since 2003 – twenty one years ago – neither Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi found themselves in the final 30 names.

It was the first real sign that the two giants of the modern game are slowly easing towards their respective retirements, but it does open up the opportunity for others to lay their hands on the golden ball.

No Messi or Ronaldo in Ballon d’Or final 30

As ever, the list of names will be dissected and pored over with a multitude of differing opinions as to who is more deserving.

Should a European Cup win or a title with your international team count for anything? Perhaps a record breaking season in terms of goals scored puts a player at the top of the list?

Now that the list is out, the 30 names are there to choose from, and Fabrizio Romano believes that there’s three glaring omissions from the final list.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not in the Ballon d'Or final 30 for the first time since 2003
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not in the Ballon d’Or final 30 for the first time since 2003

“I won’t comment on my favourite candidate for this year’s award, but in general I think it was a fair list,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.

“It’s almost an impossible job to narrow down the names and I’d have probably added Rodrygo, Xavi Simons and Frimpong.

“Rodrygo has even gone on social media already to show his feelings about his omission.

There are some big names in the final 30: Jude Bellingham, Ruben Dias, Phil Foden, Federico Valverde, Emiliano Martinez, Erling Haaland, Nico Williams, Granit Xhaka, Artem Dovbyk, Toni Kroos, Vinicius Jr., Dani Olmo, Florian Wirtz, Martin Odegaard, Mats Hummels, Rodri, Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Vitinha, Cole Palmer, Dani Carvajal, Lamine Yamal, Bukayo Saka, Hakan Calhanoglu, William Saliba, Kylian Mbappe, Lautaro Martinez, Ademola Lookman, Toni Rudiger and Alejandro Grimaldo.”

The gala for the awards, which will also include the naming of Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and winner of the Kopa Trophy, will take place in October.

City famously beat Inter 1-0 in the 2023 UCL final to completed a historic treble.

Therefore, Inter will be out for revenge when they travel to the Etihad Stadium.

New Champions League format

Expansion to 36 Teams: Instead of the usual 32 teams, 36 clubs will participate in the group phase.

Single League Phase: All teams will compete in a single league format rather than being divided into groups. This means each team will play eight matches against different opponents.

Fixture Distribution: Each team will face two opponents from each of the four seeding pots. This ensures a variety of matchups and high-profile games from the start of the competition.

Home and Away Matches: Teams will play four home matches and four away matches.

Qualification for Knockout Rounds

The top eight teams in the league phase will advance directly to the knockout stages.

Teams Ranked 9th to 24th will enter a two-legged knockout phase play-off to secure their place in the next round.

The new format is designed to increase the number of high profile matches and more inclusion of newer teams in the competition.

Manchester City won the Champions League title in the 2022/23 season, in what was a historic season for the club.

Pep Guardiola’s team managed to win a treble and by doing that, they became only the second English team after rivals Manchester United to win the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season.

The victory came at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, where City defeated Inter Milan 1-0 in the final.

The only goal of the match was scored by Rodri, whose precise finish in the 68th minute secured the win and ended a long pursuit of the prestigious trophy.

This unprecedented achievement highlighted the team’s dominance in English football and their growing influence on the European stage.

Man City had reached the Champions League final once before, when they lost against Chelsea back in 2021.

The Sky Blues have reached the Champions League semifinal on three occasions. Back in 2015/16 season, they were beaten by eventual winners Real Madrid in the semis.

In the 2020/21 season, they managed to beat Paris Saint-Germain to reach the final, where they played Chelsea.

In the 2022/23 season, they beat Real Madrid easily in the semifinal, 5-1 on aggregate, to book their place in the final.

How many times have Man City won the Champions League?

Man City Champions League
Man City won their only Champions League title back in the 2022/23 season when they beat Inter Milan to lift the trophy.

Big European nights at the Etihad Stadium

Man City’s Etihad Stadium is the place to be on European nights. The atmosphere created by the fans, who always feel that their team are going to win, is a sight to behold.

The stadium has a capacity of 53,400, filled completely with the fans to witness some of the best players in the world.

They have experienced some of the best European matches at this stadium.

From the classic 4-3 win against Bayern Munich in 2013, inspired by Sergio Aguero to the 5-3 win against Monaco of Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao, City have always managed to put on a show for their fans when they play at home.

However, the best Champions League match that the Man City faithful have experienced at home is the semifinal of the 2022/23 season against Real Madrid.

Man City won the match 4-0, completely outclassing their opponents with their attacking skill and their tactical superiority. Not many teams have been able to do that to Real Madrid.

Three Man City players to watch in the Champions League this season

Erling Haaland

Just like the water is wet and the sky is blue, Erling Haaland scores goals. He was born to score goals and in Man City, he has found the perfect team to showcase his talent to the best of his ability.

Whether it is the Champions League or the Premier League, Haaland knows where the back of the net is. Pep Guardiola’s team heavily rely on him to score the goals for them and he answers their call most of the times.

His record on the European stage is phenomenal, not only for the Sky Blues but also for his former clubs.

Kevin De Bruyne

The Belgian midfielder makes Man City tick. He creates opportunities for his teammates with his passes, crosses and the runs he makes.

His ability to score from anywhere is something that has helped the Premier League club win crucial matches in the competition.

Now De Bruyne has the experience of winning the competition, he will once again be crucial for them if they want to win the prestigious trophy.

Rodri

There are two Man City sides, one with Rodri and one without Rodri, that is how important he is. He is their midfield commander who not only supports them in attack and but also while defending.

Rodri is one of the best readers of the game and his ability to control the tempo of the match with his passing is massively underrated.

After scoring the winner in the final back in 2023, he will be hoping to go all the way again with the Sky Blues this season.

The draw for the revamped 2024/25 Champions League ‘League Phase’ has been made, with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich learning their fate.

This season’s competition will look rather different than in years past, with the group stage scrapped in favour of one 36-team League Phase.

With every team now playing two extra group matches, this phase of the tournament will also stretch into the new year.

Read on for every team’s Champions League fixtures, as well as what’s in store with the new format.

New Champions League format

As mentioned, the Champions League has been revamped this season. Instead of the traditional 32 teams split into eight groups of four, there’s now a single 36-team table, referred to as the ‘league phase’.

Teams will no longer play three opponents twice. Instead, each club will face eight different teams, with four home matches and four away.

To make the draw, teams were sorted into four seeding pots, and each club was drawn to play two opponents from each pot, with one game per pot at home and the other away.

The top eight teams from this league phase will automatically advance to the last 16, while teams ranked ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff round for the remaining spots.

Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated from European competition entirely, rather than moving to the Europa League as has happened in previous seasons for teams finishing third in the group stage.

From the last-16 onward, the knockout rounds will proceed as normal.

There’s something about Champions League nights that really gets everyone excited.

Whether it’s the quality of play that’s expected to be on show, or the first bars of the Champions League theme being played, the senses are heightened just that little bit more for those European games.

The iconic Champions League theme has been given a minor makeover this summer, ahead of the 2024/25 edition, with the new TV visuals being released on Tuesday morning.

Real Madrid are reportedly joining Manchester United in the pursuit of the potential transfer of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, who is said to have a clear preference.

Although Man Utd have been tracking Dumfries for some time, Real Madrid have joined the race in the last few days and it’s felt that a move to the Bernabeu would be the Netherlands international’s favoured destination, according to Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes.

Dumfries has shone during his time in Serie A and it would be interesting to see what he could do in the Premier League with a club like United, though in fairness it’s not clear if they really need a new signing in that position after bringing in Noussair Mazraoui, who can play in both full-back positions.

Real Madrid also have options in that area of the pitch, though Dani Carvajal is not getting any younger, so it might be worth exploring alternatives.

Denzel Dumfries to Manchester United or Real Madrid?

Dumfries transfer: Will he end up at Man United or Real Madrid?

It could be tricky for Inter to keep Dumfries, who is a big name who may well feel he’s achieved all he can at the San Siro.

The 28-year-old is a big talent and, at this age, it might be his last chance to secure a truly big move like this, so it will be interesting to see how this saga pans out.

Inter will no doubt hope they can persuade Dumfries to stay as he could be a vital player for them again this season as they look to retain their Serie A crown.

It’s often been said that Jose Mourinho is the master of self promotion, and his introduction to English football all those years ago arguably set the tone as to how the ‘Special One’ was perceived.

The only trouble with still trying to be cock of the walk and the main man when your skills have evaporated is that your words are going to come back to haunt you.

In truth, the Portuguese hasn’t been special for some while now.

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce dumped out of the Champions League

His time at Man United wasn’t quite a disaster but neither was it a brilliant roller coaster ride, and the less said about his sojourn at Tottenham, the better.

On Tuesday night, Mourinho watched as his Fenerbahce side contrived to let in a 118th-minute penalty against 10-man Lille, which saw the French club progress to the Champions League play-offs, and condemned the Turkish giants to the Europa League.

It was yet another example of the 61-year-old having lost his touch.

Jose Mourinho has lost his touch
Jose Mourinho has lost his touch

Of course, Mourinho’s ego won’t allow him to believe that he’s still anything but the best around, but the pressure is right on his shoulders now.

Not only will the Fenerbahce faithful expect him to win the Europa League, but they have to overhaul arch rivals, Galatasaray, in the Turkish Super Lig.

Last season, they were agonisingly just three points from the title, despite accruing 99 points, scoring 99 goals and only losing one league match all season.

If Mourinho thought that he was going for one last big pay day and little else, the truth has already hit home.

We might even see some last minute movement in the transfer market as he comes to terms with what he has at his disposal and the expectations of a demanding club and fan base.

The latter will perhaps already be realising that Mourinho is not any longer what he says on the tin, however.

Former Arsenal and Man Utd forward Alexis Sanchez returned to Italian side Udinese after 13 years away from the club.

Now 35 years old, Sanchez played 33 times across all competitions for Inter last season, scoring four times and helping the club win the Serie A title, before departing at the end of his contract.

That came after a successful year in France with Marseille — who he joined from Inter for one season — scoring 18 times in 44 appearances across all competitions.

Sanchez last played for Udinese between 2006 and 2011, scoring 21 goals in 112 games across all competitions, and rejoins the club on a two-year deal. Udinese won just six of their 38 Serie A games last season, but picked up 19 draws to help them finish 15th on 37 points, two points clear of relegation.

A 166-time Chile international, Sanchez left Udinese in 2011 for Barcelona and won multiple honours with the Blaugrana — including the 2012/13 La Liga title — during a 141-game, 47-goal spell before joining Arsenal in 2014.

At the Emirates, Sanchez would score 80 goals in 166 appearances, winning two FA Cups and a Community Shield, before leaving for a more modest spell at Manchester United between January 2018 and the summer of 2019.

Sanchez is Udinese’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window, alongside Lorenzo Lucca, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Damian Pizarro, Jesper Karlstrom, Iker Bravo and Goncalo Esteves.
