West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady appears to have taken a swipe at Newcastle United’s Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) owners.

Although Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi recently left, PIF remain in charge at St. James’ Park, continuing a project that has thus far yielded a 2022/23 EFL Cup final and a berth in the 2023/24 Champions League group stage.

However, Newcastle aren’t the only sporting project for PIF, who are the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Alongside winning the right to host the 2034 World Cup, PIF have also ploughed money into the Saudi Pro League.

Their funding has helped bring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane into the league, among a host of other star names.

Even so, the league still struggles to attract crowds not only on TV, but also in stadiums, with many teams only boasting modest followings.

Brady critical of PIF – “You can’t just beat that with mountains of money

Brady travelled to the Middle East earlier this year to look for extra investment in West Ham.

However, the 55-year-old doesn’t appear scared to speak her mind when it comes to the Saudi football project.

In fact, Brady is certain the Pro League will never catch up to the Premier League in terms of quality or prestige.

“An average Pro League crowd is about 8,000,” she wrote in The Sun.

“Yet the Saudi Public Investment Fund has spent prodigiously on many sports in continuing efforts to improve its worldwide reputation.

“Yes, the state has zillions to throw at sport and football in particular.

“In contrast, England has huge crowds, competitive leagues, a decent infrastructure, top teams and players, high wages and tradition.

“The Prem also looks after the whole pyramid — giving away about 20 per cent of its income to the EFL, WSL, PFA, FA and grassroots football. You can’t beat that with just mountains of money.”

Newcastle are believed to be interested in bringing Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo to St James’ Park in 2025 as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his front line.

This summer was a disappointing one for the Magpies as their main objective was to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and keep hold of their star players such as Anthony Gordon.

The Tyneside club did both successfully, however, in terms of adding to Howe’s squad, the transfer window was underwhelming.

Newcastle also failed to secure their top target in Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace turned down multiple bids for the centre-back. The positive for fans of the Premier League outfit is that they will now have money to spend in 2025 and according to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are ready to battle Liverpool and Arsenal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.

Howe is said to be attracted to Mbeumo’s versatility as the 25-year-old can play anywhere across the frontline, an area the English coach is keen to strengthen at St James’ Park.

The Brentford star has been a solid addition to the Premier League ever since Brentford’s promotion back in 2021 and has started the current campaign with three goals across the Bees’ opening three matches.

Brentford are said to want around £50m for Mbeumo and with a contract expiring at the Gtech Stadium in 2026, it remains to be seen if any of the interested parties are willing to match this asking price.

Chris Sutton believes Newcastle United are in danger of losing Eddie Howe following a disappointing summer transfer window.

The Magpies brought in William Osula and Lloyd Kelly as their only outfield sayings alongside making Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea permanent.

That was despite being linked with a host of high-profile moves, most notably Marc Guehi.

Newcastle saw several bids turned down by Crystal Palace for Guehi, who has caught the eye over the last couple of years at club level and for his excellent performances at Euro 2024 for England.

That has left Howe with a headache at centre-back, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both still recovering from long-term injuries.

‘Alarm bells ringing’ at Newcastle over Howe future, says Sutton

Eddie Howe, head coach of Newcastle United applauds the fans after the Premier League match between Newcastle United FC and Southampton FC at St James’ Park on August 17, 2024 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Despite the club sitting fifth with seven points from three Premier League games, Sutton believes Newcastle fans have every reason to be worried about the future of their manager.

The former Blackburn Rovers striker puts that largely down to their failure to secure Guehi, coupled with the reports linking Howe to the England national team job.

“It’s fascinating what’s going on at Newcastle, at this moment in time,” said Sutton (via HITC). “From the outside, and I am not on the inside at Newcastle, if I am a Newcastle fan, then there are alarm bells ringing.

“He (Howe) seems to make Marc Guehi his number one target. They didn’t get that over the line. He spoke about concerns in the summer that they weren’t in alignment, the club hierarchy and Eddie Howe.

“It wouldn’t be a great surprise to see Eddie Howe as the next England manager. Newcastle fans must be concerned. What happens next at Newcastle?”

Newcastle United have started the season well despite their underwhelming transfer window.

The Magpies needed big reinforcement to the squad after suffering an injury crisis last season which resulted in their seventh placed finish in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s team have won twice and drawn once in their first three matches of the season.

They chased Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi all summer but failed to complete his signing in the end.

Guehi has been a star performer for England and at Euro 2024, he was one of their best players.

The player was involved in England’s latest match against Ireland and his performance impressed Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

Shearer said on The Rest is Football:

“He looked good, didn’t he? I thought his passing was really good as well.

“I thought when you are fizzing it into the midfield when you have got to get through and break the line, I thought some of his passing was superb. Didn’t have to defend that much, but I thought when you are on the ball and you have got possession, then you need someone and I thought he was really good at that, yeah.”

There is no question about the quality of Guehi and the Eagles would most likely lose him next year in a big money move.

They will not mind that since they will be pocketing a huge sum, just like they did with the sale of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich.

Newcastle are expected to return for Guehi either in January or next summer as Eddie Howe still retains an interest in the player.

Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga was linked with a move to Newcastle United during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies submitted a substantial offer to sign the 22-year-old on deadline day, but they failed with a move for the Swedish winger. The player has now revealed that he has spoken to Alexander Isak regarding a potential move to Newcastle.

“Isak talked to me about it. But I said the same to him as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together. But I have a contract with Nottingham.”

Elanga has revealed that the interest from Newcastle suggests that he is doing well in his career, but he is focused on the task at hand and he has a contract with Nottingham Forest.

The player told Fotboll Skanalen: “The environment in Nottingham is good. It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest. But Nottingham is also a big club, they have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born. But I’m happy in Nottingham and have a contract there.”

Elanga could form a partnership with Isak

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle decide to renew their interest in the winger in the upcoming January transfer window. They could certainly use more quality and depth in the wide areas.

The 22-year-old has played with Isak for the national team and they could form a quality partnership at Newcastle as well. The Magpies have an exciting project and they have the resources to build a terrific squad. The Swedish winger will certainly want to be part of that if the opportunity comes his way.

Elanga has been very respectful of Nottingham Forest while discussing the Newcastle interest, and they will certainly be impressed with the way he has handled the transfer speculations.

The Premier League side will hope to hold onto the 22-year-old for as long as possible.

Arsenal reportedly made a late summer transfer window enquiry over a possible deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, who was also linked with Liverpool a couple of months earlier.

Gordon has improved a great deal under Eddie Howe’s guidance at St James’ Park, and it’s well documented that he had already been highly regarded during his days as a youngster at Everton, when he’d attracted interest from Chelsea.

Liverpool were the main name linked with the England international this summer, but it seems Arsenal also tried their luck with a late approach, though it seemingly never got anywhere particularly concrete or advanced…

Gordon transfer: Arsenal would do well to sign the Newcastle winger

Gordon could surely be a good fit for a club like Arsenal, who were known to be in the market for a top winger this summer, if the opportunity came along.

The Gunners were seemingly interested in Nico Williams, though he was deemed unaffordable, which meant that their only signing in the end was a loan move for Raheem Sterling.

It seems unlikely that Sterling will be a particularly long-term option for Mikel Arteta’s side, so it will be interesting to see if this leads them to look at someone like Gordon again.

One imagines Liverpool might also have a good reason to keep on pursuing the 23-year-old as well, with some doubts over Mohamed Salah’s future, as he’s now in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and recently spoke publicly about this being his last season with the club.

Anthony Gordon to Arsenal?

There’s a long time for things to change, of course, so Liverpool fans will hope they might still have a chance of keeping Salah, but if the Egypt international does move on, Gordon could be just the kind of young player who’d make an ideal long-term replacement.

It might be difficult for a former Evertonian to go to LFC, though, which might perhaps give Arsenal an edge in this potential transfer battle.

Anthony Gordon’s second-half performance against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday has been described as ‘terrible’ by talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham.

The Three Lions beat the Boys in Green 2-0 in Dublin in Lee Carsley’s first game as interim manager following the departure of Gareth Southgate.

England’s goals came through two controversial figures, with Jack Grealish and Declan Rice — two players with famous Irish roots and experience in their youth and senior systems — deciding the match.

Gordon enjoyed a positive night in just his fifth England appearance and first competitive start for his country.

The Newcastle United winger created two chances and hit the target with all three of his attempted shots, while he completed 90% of his passes, had eight touches in the opposition box and was involved in the build-up to Rice’s opening goal.

However, most of Gordon’s best moments came before the break, with the 23-year-old fading in the second half before being brought off in the 77th minute.

Newcastle star Gordon goes from ‘terrific’ to ‘terrible’

Anthony Gordon of England is challenged by Will Smallbone of Republic of Ireland during the UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League B Group B2 match between Republic of Ireland and England at Aviva Stadium on September 07, 2024 in Dublin, Ireland.

Gordon was given a 7/10 by Durham for his player ratings.

But while the outspoken pundit credited the former Everton man for his first-half performance, he wasn’t afraid to make his feelings known about the second half.

“He was terrific in the first half but terrible in the second half,” said Durham.

Despite a supposed ‘terrible’ second half, Gordon did more than enough against Ireland to suggest he should have been given more than just one minute at Euro 2024.

He will hope to play a prominent role again when England host Finland at Wembley on Tuesday in their second UEFA Nations League B Group 2 match.

Newcastle United may be living to regret a transfer decision they made a few years ago as James Tavernier has continued to shine with Rangers.

Remarkably, the Magpies sold Tavernier for just £90k after a series of loan spells in which he’d failed to impress, but he’s now gone on to earn legendary status at Ibrox.

The 32-year-old is now club captain and has been a top performer at right-back since he joined in 2015, with more goals now in his career even than current Magpies star forward Alexander Isak.

Tavernier is on a total of 133 career goals, while Isak is only on 108, despite being a striker, though of course he’s also quite a lot younger, which also needs to be taken into consideration.

It’s fairly clear, however, that Newcastle didn’t give Tavernier enough of a chance when they had him, as he surely could have contributed something at St James’ Park, even if not quite the form we’ve seen from him in a Rangers shirt.

Being a star player in the Scottish Premiership is obviously no measure of how a player could do in English top flight, but at the same time he probably also could’ve benefited from having better players around him, and a higher standard of coaching.

Unfortunately this is one NUFC will have to live to regret as they barely even made any money from his sale. Bad business all round.

Manchester United and Newcastle are both interested in free agent midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who is prioritising a move to the Premier League for his next club, CaughtOffside understands.

The France international remains available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus at the end of his contract earlier in the summer, and it seems he’s keen to try a new challenge in England, rejecting interest from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

As has been widely reported, CaughtOffside also understands that Rabiot has rejected interest from Galatasaray, while a potential move to Al Nassr looks like a non-starter, as he was on their list earlier in the summer, but no longer, due to the fact that they have been unable to make room for another foreign player.

Rabiot himself also doesn’t seem keen on Turkey or Saudi as he wants to play in the Premier League, with United and Newcastle looking the most likely options for the 29-year-old.

Adrien Rabiot to Man United or Newcastle?

Rabiot transfer: Where will the free agent end up?

Rabiot could be an option for MUFC, with the club internally discussing the possibility of going against their current structure and strategy of mainly signing younger players.

Although Rabiot will turn 30 soon, there is surely some sense in making an exception for this free agent, as it could be crucial to bring in an upgrade on the struggling Casemiro, while Erik ten Hag has also arguably not adequately replaced departing duo Scott McTominay and Sofyan Amrabat.

Rabiot shone at Juventus and one imagines they would have been quite happy to keep him, but it seems he’s now set for a new challenge, and it would be exciting to see him testing himself at a top Premier League club.

Newcastle would certainly do well to land this experienced talent to add some real winning mentality to their squad.

Adrien Rabiot continues to be linked with a move this summer.

The 29-year-old French international is a free agent and clubs like Manchester United and Newcastle United are keen on him. According to a report from Le Figaro via Sport Witness, the two clubs could soon submit an offer for him.

Barcelona have been keeping tabs on the situation as well, but they will not be able to afford him. The Spanish outfit are going through financial difficulties and therefore Manchester United and Newcastle have an advantage in the transfer race.

Signing the French international or a free transfer could prove to be the ideal move. He will add creativity, control and defensive cover to the side.

Adrien Rabiot is wanted by a host of clubs this summer.

Adrien Rabiot would improve both clubs

The 29-year-old central midfielder has proven himself for club and country over the years. He is at the peak of his powers and he could transform Manchester United or Newcastle in the middle of the park. The Red Devils need more quality in the midfield and they need someone who can control the tempo of the game and help out defensively. That 29-year-old could be the ideal fit for them. He could form a solid partnership with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte.

Meanwhile, Newcastle need more depth in the midfield as well. They need someone who can run the game from the deep and Rabiot certainly has the physicality and technical attributes. He will want to join a big club capable of winning trophies and a move to Manchester United or Newcastle could be attractive for him. The Red Devils are one of the biggest clubs in the world and Newcastle have an ambitious project. It remains to be seen where the 29-year-old midfielder ends up eventually.
