Norway secured a 2-1 win over Austria in the UEFA Nations League on Monday with Man City’s Erling Haaland producing the winner for his nation.

The Norwegians were looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance against Kazakhstan on Friday in which Stale Solbakken’s side drew 0-0.

Playing at home, Norway got the result they wanted against a good Austria team with Haaland playing a big role in his team securing the three points.

The Man City star scored a late winner and showed once again why he is one of the best strikers in the world as the 24-year-old continues his impressive start to the new season. The forward completely bullied his opponent in the Austrian box before finishing past Patrick Pentz.

Man City have been working on a new deal for their star striker Erling Haaland and the Norwegian’s contract is likely to contain a release clause amid links to Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old’s current contract at the Etihad Stadium expires in 2027 and the Premier League club are eager to offer the forward a new one given the impact he has made since arriving from Borussia Dortmund during the summer of 2022.

Haaland is undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the world and has accumulated an impressive total of 97 goals and 14 assists across the 102 appearances he has made for Man City so far.

Naturally, this has caught the attention of Real Madrid and the La Liga champions are often linked to the Norway international.

There have even been rumours of Haaland’s current Man City contract containing a Real Madrid-specific release clause, but according to Fabrizio Romano, that is not the case.

The transfer journalist expects the striker’s new deal to contain a release clause of some sort, but it will not be specific to the La Liga giants.

Man City closing in on a new contract for Erling Haaland

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Haaland’s contract situation at Man City and has admitted that there is no agreement between the parties yet but talks have been very positive.

“There have been talks already for months between Erling Haaland and Manchester City over a new deal. So this is the priority for City,” the transfer journalist said while speaking on the latest episode of CaughtOffside’s The Debrief podcast. “It’s also an open negotiation with Haaland, who is very happy at the club. So they’ve been discussing now for months, almost six, seven months, discussing a new deal for Erling Haaland.

“So there is an active conversation and I think there is a good possibility, a good opportunity for them to reach an agreement. Then about the release clause, I’m not sure it’s going to be a specific clause for a club, we always had this kind of rumours, but Erling Haaland always had clauses in his contract since he was at Borussia Dortmund.”

Romano continued by stating: “At Manchester City, there are release clauses in the contract of Erling Haaland, but it’s not for a specific club. There will be, I think, a clause for his potential exit, but not only for Real Madrid.

“It will be an open clause and we will see the terms of this potential new deal. At the moment, the agreement is not reached yet, but there is a very good, positive conversation between the parties.”

The summer of 2023 saw Saudi Arabian clubs go big in the transfer market and they managed to lure many Premier League stars to the Saudi Pro League, one being former Man City defender Aymeric Laporte.

The centre-back moved to Al-Nassr as part of a €27.5m deal after spending five and a half years with the Premier League champions. The Spain international’s time at the Etihad Stadium was a massive success as he picked up 12 major honours under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Laporte was an important part of the Spanish coach’s squad but not a vital one, so he allowed the defender to leave last summer.

One year later, it is being reported that the 30-year-old would be open to returning to Europe as life in Saudi Arabia is not what it seemed for the footballer. The Spanish star was linked with a move to Real Madrid during the latest transfer window but has admitted that the La Liga champions did not approach him.

“There was nothing, no approach”, Laporte told Marca ahead of Spain’s UEFA Nations League clash against Switzerland.

“In Saudi Arabia, I’m far from my normal surroundings and family. I could consider in future returning to Europe. If an offer comes in, it has to be looked at.”

Aymeric Laporte left Man City for Al-Nassr last summer

Aymeric Laporte not the only player to struggle in Saudi Arabia

Life in Saudi Arabia is drastically different for many European footballers and some don’t get used to the lifestyle. Jordan Henderson cut his time in the Saudi Pro League short to join Ajax and it seems that Laporte is not entirely happy at his current club.

The centre-back’s impressive displays in Spain’s run to Euro 2024 glory has brought him back onto the radar of major European clubs and this could develop into concrete interest in the near future.

It remains to be seen if Laporte decided to cut his time with Al-Nassr short and if he does, he will have plenty of options in Europe.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has attracted a lot of attention with his performances in the Premier League this past season.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the London club from Blackburn Rovers in January and he has established himself as a key player for the club. According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool are keen on signing the midfielder at the end of the season and they could look to make a move for him in January.

Liverpool are hoping to sign a quality defensive midfielder after failing to sign Martin Zubimendi during the summer window. Wharton is reportedly on their radar and they will face competition from Premier League champions Manchester City.

According to Daily Mail, Manchester City want to sign the 20-year-old England international as an alternative to Rodri. The Spanish international has been linked with a move back to La Liga and Manchester City are drawing up contingency plans. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool or Manchester City decide to come forward with an offer to sign the player.

Liverpool and Manchester City keen on Adam Wharton.

Adam Wharton would improve both teams

The 20-year-old is a prodigious talent with a bright future and he could develop into one of the best midfielders in the league with the right guidance. Both Liverpool and Manchester City need more depth in the middle of the park and he would be the ideal long-term investment for them.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can win the race for his signature. They will need to find a quality alternative to Wataru Endo, if they want to compete at the highest level. While the Japanese international has done reasonably well since joining the club, Liverpool need an upgrade on him in order to match up to the European elite. Wharton has all the attributes to develop into a key player for the Reds, and it remains to be seen whether they can get the deal done.

There is a lot of interest in Jamal Musiala from all top European clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano, while Bayern Munich have also been making it one of their main missions to tie him down to a new contract amid transfer rumours linking him with Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano provided an update on Musiala’s situation as it seems Bayern have been trying hard for some time now to get the Germany international to commit his future, without any success so far.

Musiala has shone for Bayern and for the German national team in recent times, showing himself to be one of the most exciting young talents in European football, and it would be a real boost for the Premier League to see a star name like him coming to English football for his peak years.

Jamal Musiala has been linked with Manchester City

Musiala was recently linked as a target for Man City by Team Talk as they reported on the club’s list of potential targets to replace Kevin De Bruyne, so this could be one to keep an eye on if the 21-year-old doesn’t end up putting pen to paper on a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

Musiala transfer: Fabrizio Romano’s update on the Bayern star

“Bayern have been pushing for months to extend Musiala’s contract and this remain one of their main missions. Bayern will insist again with a big proposal; he’s in the list of all the top European clubs, this is very normal, but it all depends on what happens with Bayern in talks,” Romano said.

City surely won’t be alone in targeting Musiala, but he certainly makes sense as someone to go for if De Bruyne ends up leaving the Etihad Stadium.

The Belgian playmaker has just a year left on his current contract and has spoken publicly about how hard it might be to turn down life-changing money from Saudi Arabia.

Erling Haaland is close to signing a new contract with Manchester City, but it might contain a release clause according to reports.

The Norway international, who has won the Golden Boot in each of his two seasons in the Premier League has made an unbelievable start to the season.

After having a full summer off the 24-year-old appears refreshed and has scored seven goals in the first three games of the season, including back to back hat-tricks against Ipswich and West Ham.

Haaland close to agreeing new contract

Haaland has broken numerous scoring records following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and won the Treble in his first season with the club.

The Norwegian’s current deal expires in 2027 and City at some point will have to approach Haaland’s camp for talks over an extension.

However, Spanish publication Marca have reported that Haaland is set to commit his future to the English champions and is close to signing a new deal at the Etihad.

The report states that City will make the striker the highest paid player at the club, taking over that mantle from Kevin De Bruyne.

Haaland has scored seven goals in the first three Premier League games of the season.

Marca also adds that the new deal is expected to have a release clause which they state should be “achievable” for Real Madrid in the future.

A release clause would certainly allow Haaland to have more control over the direction of his career, with City activating the release clause in his Dortmund deal to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

Interest from Los Blancos has been there in the past but following the arrival of Kylian Mbappe it appears a move for Haaland isn’t much of a priority at this point in time.

Haaland’s numbers at City have quite frankly been ridiculous with the striker scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The club will be desperate to keep hold of him for as long as possible, but will be aware that he will likely move on at some point as it feels like Haaland has his career mapped out already.

Jack Grealish admitted there’s no bad blood on his side after both he and Declan Rice received a hostile reception against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Grealish was back in an England shirt for the first time after being left out of the squad for Euro 2024 and he thrived in the number ten role interim manager Lee Carsley played him in.

The Manchester City man and Rice both got hostile receptions on their return to Ireland with the Arsenal star having earned three caps for the country before switching allegiance, whilst Grealish represented the country up until under-21 level before switching allegiances.

Grealish on reception and tough summer

It was a hostile crowd that greeted England and particularly Rice and Grealish, with one rather unsavoury sign targetting the pair spotted in the crowd.

However, as is so often the case with football it has a way of writing it’s own scripts, with Rice opening the scoring and then not celebrating before he teed up Grealish who doubled England’s lead and didn’t think twice about celebrating.

It was a good performance from England who played some nice free flowing attacking football, even if they did drop off in the second half.

Grealish and Rice both scored despite receiving a hostile reception from the crowd.

Speaking after the game Grealish admitted he expected the reception and that he enjoyed his time playing for the Republic of Ireland.

“It was what me and Declan expected. We have nothing bad to say, we both enjoyed our time [playing for Ireland] – I certainly did and I have a lot of Irish in my family, so there’s no bad blood whatsoever from my side,” he told ITV Sport.

Grealish was more open when talking about his return to the England side and described this summer as one of the worst of his life.

“Going to the fans at the end and hearing them sing my name, listen there’s no better feeling than playing for England, everyone will say the same thing, especially in games like this when you know the whole nation is going to be watching,” he added.

“Over the summer, it was one of the worst summers of my life because you can’t not see everything that is happening in front of you. It was difficult but it’s given me something to bounce back.”

Next up for England is a game against Finland at Wembley on Tuesday evening before the Premier League returns next weekend.

Ireland’s clash with England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin is turning into a nightmare for the home fans as the villains of the day Jack Grealish and Declan Rice have both got on the scoresheet in the UEFA Nations League clash.

The two England stars used to represent Ireland at youth level, with the Arsenal star also featuring in several senior games, before switching their allegiances to England. This did not go down well with Irish fans and they have made their feelings clear throughout Saturday’s match with both players being met with a course of boos.

Ireland fans’ worst nightmare has become reality inside the opening 26 minutes of the game as both Rice and Grealish have got on the scoresheet.

The Arsenal star opened the scoring after 11 minutes and 15 minutes later, the midfielder combined with Grealish to double the Three Lions’ lead as part of an impressive move.

Premier League clubs Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal are all keeping their eyes on their transfer targets for next year.

The Premier League giants invested heavily in their squads this summer and they are all expected to be a part of the title race this season.

Even off the pitch, they are ready to compete against each other when it comes to signing a Premier League player.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo has attracted interest from all the top clubs in England for his consistent performances.

According to HITC, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United are all keen on signing the Brentford attacker.

His fine performances have gone under the radar due to Ivan Toney’s presence at the club.

However, it was him and Yoane Wissa who shouldered the responsibility to lead the club’s attack during Toney’s absence because of his betting ban.

Bryan Mbuemo to Man City?

The report states that Mbuemo could be one of the most in-demand players next year with all the clubs interested in securing his services.

He fits the profile that the clubs are looking for these days, doing well in data and analytics that most recruitment teams follow now.

Brentford will be hoping to tie down the player on a long term contract at the club.

Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal are all keen on Mbuemo

He currently has two years left on his deal but the Bees will be looking to offer him a long term contract with improved terms.

The Cameroon international is a goal scorer as well as a goal creator and his versatility in the attacking positions can be a great asset to the team that signs him.

The attacker has started the new season in fine form, with three goals in three games so far.

He scored a brace last week against Southampton in Brentford 3-1 win against the newly promoted team.

Man City ace, Kevin de Bruyne, isn’t known as someone who courts controversy, but he’s the latest in a growing number of voices to express displeasure at the fixture congestion imposed upon teams by the game’s governing bodies.

The most successful outfits across Europe appear to be being penalised for being just that, as more and more games, both domestically and internationally, are taking place.

This season’s Champions League format has changed so that each team will play eight rather than six games in the group stage. In another subtle change it will also be more of a league rather than group format before the Round of 16.

De Bruyne unhappy with FIFA’s thirst for money

Were City to do well domestically, there are FA Cup games and Carabao Cup games to factor in too.

Not to mention that, for the first time ever, the Club World Cup, normally played around Christmas time, will be moved to next summer and expanded to feature 32 teams from across the globe.

“The real problem will emerge after the Club World Cup,” de Bruyne was quoted as saying to Reuters.

“We know there will be only three weeks between the Club World Cup final and the first Premier League match. So, we have three weeks to rest and prepare for another 80 matches.

“Maybe this year things will be okay, but next year could be problematic. The Professional Footballers’ Association in England and other player associations have tried to find solutions.

“The issue is that UEFA and FIFA keep adding extra matches, and we can raise concerns, but no solutions have been found. It seems that money speaks louder than the players’ voices.”

The Belgian’s ire follows a similar outburst from team-mate, Bernardo Silva, detailed by CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, via X.

As de Bruyne indicates, player welfare doesn’t seem as important to the governing bodies as earning money, but this could backfire spectacularly on them.

Players are not robots, and if FIFA and UEFA really want to put on a show in their tournaments, then they must take into account that the elite simply cannot play all year round.

One only needs to recall how tired some teams looked at Euro 2024 – England especially – to understand the seriousness of the issue.
