The 2024 summer transfer window has shut for all of Europe’s big five leagues and after months of working on transfer stories, Fabrizio Romano has revealed his favourite signing over the last three months.

The summer transfer window is crucial for football clubs as they look to add to their squads for the new season and fix issues that appeared throughout the previous campaign.

Major deals took place during this summer with Kylian Mbappe’s switch to Real Madrid being the biggest story, while Atletico Madrid’s acquisition of Julian Alvarez from Man City was the most expensive with £82m switching hands.

However, none of these two deals were Fabrizio Romano‘s favourite from the 2024 summer transfer window.

The transfer expert has admitted that Paris Saint-Germain’s capture of João Neves from Benfica was his favourite transfer ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as he believes that the midfielder was somewhat of a bargain, despite the €70m fee attached to the deal, as the midfielder’s potential is very high.

Fabrizio Romano reveals his favourite signing of the 2024 summer transfer window

Speaking on the latest episode of CaughtOffside’s The Debrief podcast, Fabrizio Romano stated that Neves’ move to PSG was his favourite, but also threw another transfer into the mix.

“My favourite deal has been João Neves to Paris Saint-Germain. I think Paris Saint-Germain signed a fantastic, fantastic player for the present and also for the future. I still believe that the future of João Neves is going to be super bright. The potential of this boy is something really, really special,” the transfer expert said.

“Signing a quality player like him with a big potential for €60m plus €10m in add-ons, I think for modern football and modern transfer markets, it’s an incredible price. It’s kind of a bargain. So I think PSG signed a gem with Neves, one of my favourite transfers.”

Romano continued by giving an honourable mention to Scott McTominay’s switch from Man United to Napoli.

“I also really appreciated Scott McTominay to Napoli. I think for Serie A, he’s perfect. For Antonio Conte, he’s perfect. It was a very good signing for Napoli. So I mentioned these two, but Neves is my favourite.”

Scott McTominay scored once again for Scotland in their UEFA Nations League clash with Portugal as the midfielder showed Man United why they should have kept him this summer.

Scotland were looking to bounce back from their opening loss to Poland but suffered a cruel 2-1 defeat following a late goal from Cristiano Ronaldo.

McTominay opened the scoring on the night with a tidy header, making it 10 goals in his last 17 appearances for the Scottish national team. The 27-year-old has always stepped up for his country and his work ethic could have been useful for his former club Man United.

The midfielder left the Manchester outfit this summer to join Napoli as the Red Devils looked to bring in Manuel Ugarte from PSG while keeping the likes of Casemiro.

McTominay had his best season at Old Trafford last time around and his latest goal shows that the Premier League club may have made a mistake allowing the Scotland star to leave.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has scored a huge goal for Scotland tonight to complete their comeback from 2-0 down to draw level at 2-2.

McTominay recently left Man Utd for a late summer transfer window move to Serie A giants Napoli, but he remains the same old reliable player for his country, as he’s shown again tonight.

Watch below as McTominay broke into the box in typical style to steer home a big goal for Scotland, giving them hope of a memorable win as we head towards the closing stages of tonight’s game…

Poland had led 2-0 and looked to be cruising in this Nations League tie, but now Scotland will be chasing a winner after McTominay’s tremendous impact.

The 27-year-old has often been a reliable goal-scorer from midfield, even if he’s never quite been a star performer for so much of his time at Old Trafford.

McTominay will now hope he can continue to fire in the goals after becoming a Napoli player, while this big international match tonight is also another chance for him to remind everyone what he’s capable of.

After watching how bad Casemiro was against Liverpool at the weekend, there must be a few United fans wondering if it was really the best decision to let McTominay go…

Manchester United have been heavily criticised for letting Scott McTominay leave for Napoli this summer, with former Red Devils star Teddy Sheringham making it clear he feels he was one of the few players he had anything positive to say about recently.

The Scotland international was a hard-working and reliable squad player at Old Trafford – someone the club could always rely on to make an impact when needed, whilst also being prepared to accept being in and out of the team and often having to wait on the bench for a chance to make an impact.

Man Utd ended up selling McTominay to Napoli this summer, with many top clubs cashing in on their homegrown players due to Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, but it’s clear Sheringham feels it was a risky decision.

Sheringham, speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas”, discussed Marcus Rashford’s recent poor form and a number of other topics, with McTominay coming up as someone he had a lot of time for.

McTominay transfer decision criticised by Manchester United legend

“The only player who I’d say can hold his head up for his effort in a United shirt over the past few months would be Scott McTominay… and he’s just gone to Napoli,” Sheringham said.

“He’s one of your players who runs and chases when things aren’t going well. He works things out, and he tries to put things right. There doesn’t look to be too many people out there trying to put things right; they’re all playing in their own little shells… ‘please don’t dig me out this week, it might be my turn…’

“That’s not how you play in a top football team. You’ve got to look after one another, you’ve got to help your teammates out, and hope they help you out when you falter. That’s how you grind games out sometimes. It’s not always pretty football; especially when you’re still working out how you’re going to play.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay completed a move to Napoli on deadline day.

The 27-year-old Scottish international will now look to get his career back on track with regular football at the Italian club. Manchester United sanctioned his departure yesterday and manager Erik ten Hag revealed that he was disappointed to see the player moving on.

However, former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City player Michael Brown has now slammed the Manchester United manager for his comments and he revealed that the Dutchman was speaking a load of rubbish and did not treat the midfielder properly during his time at the club.

Brown believes that McTominay should have received more credit than he did during his time at the club. The former Premier League player feels that McTominay was treated as just another homegrown player.

He said on BBC: “I think Erik ten Hag was talking a load of rubbish when he said he was disappointed at Scott McTominay’s departure. McTominay has given everything to Manchester United and whenever there has been a chance to leave him out, Ten Hag has.

“He keeps getting treated like the homegrown player rather than the player he is. The manager has not treated him right. I get certain other players have to play at times – but McTominay has not been treated right.”

Scott McTominay did well at Man United

The 27-year-old did reasonably well at Manchester United during his time at the club and his ability to slot into multiple roles made him a useful squad player. The 27-year-old has all the tools to develop into a complete central midfielder and it will be interesting to see if regular gametime at  Napoli can get the best out of him.

The midfielder will be looking forward to the challenge in Italian football, and there is no doubt that he has the physicality and technicality to succeed in Serie A. Napoli are one of the biggest clubs in Italy and he will be hoping to challenge for major trophies with them. He will get to work with a top class manager like Antonio Conte as well.

Transfer deadline day finally saw confirmation that Scott McTominay had left Man United and signed for Italian giants, Napoli.

The 27-year-old had been rumoured to be leaving the club for a while but any rumours turned out to be just that.

However, the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which mean academy products at a club can be counted as ‘pure profit’ on the balance sheet if they’re sold, appears to be the reason behind McTominay’s departure this summer.

That’s certainly the impression Erik ten Hag had during his pre-match press conference for the Liverpool game, and he clearly wasn’t happy.

Erik ten Hag was ‘talking a load of rubbish’ when he claimed he was disappointed to see Scott McTominay leave Manchester United for Napoli, according to ex-Premier League midfielder Michael Brown.

McTominay is a boyhood United supporter and a product of their youth system, playing 255 games for the club across all competitions.

The Scotland international has notched 29 goals and eight assists during that time — including seven goals in the Premier League last season — winning Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup titles along the way.

But McTominay hasn’t always been a nailed-on starter and this summer, he became the subject of intense transfer speculation with clubs from both England and abroad courting his signature.

In the end, it’s Serie A outfit Napoli who have won the race to sign McTominay, who has already been announced as part of a busy summer window for the Partenopei, who have also signed the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Billy Gilmour and David Neres.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Ten Hag expressed his disappointment at losing McTominay.

“It’s a little bit mixed. I’m very happy for him and it’s also for us, but it’s mixed, because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him, because he is Man United in every vein,” Ten Hag told reporters (via the Manchester United website). “He was so important for our team, for Manchester United. He was here for over 22 years.”

Ten Hag ‘talking rubbish’ about McTominay, says Brown

During his time under Ten Hag, McTominay started in just 28 of his 58 Premier League appearances and only five of his 12 combined Champions League and Europa League matches.

It is this lack of consistent runs in the Man Utd starting XI why Brown has blasted Ten Hag’s comments, claiming the Dutchman ‘didn’t treat McTominay right’.

“I think Erik ten Hag was talking a load of rubbish when he said he was disappointed at Scott McTominay’s departure,” former Man City, Leeds and Tottenham midfielder Brown told BBC Sport.

McTominay has given everything to Manchester United and whenever there has been a chance to leave him out, Ten Hag has.

He keeps getting treated like the homegrown player rather than the player he is. The manager has not treated him right.

I get certain other players have to play at times – but McTominay has not been treated right.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted he would ‘prefer’ not to have sold Scott McTominay this summer, taking a dig at Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Ten Hag takes dig at PSR rules regarding Scott McTominay sale

In the end, it’s Serie A outfit Napoli who have won the race to sign McTominay, who has already been spotted being greeted by supporters at Naples airport ahead of a €25m+€5m move.

Current PSR rules mean that the sale of a homegrown player looks better on a club’s balance sheet than those bought for a fee.

Fielding questions about the departure of McTominay, Ten Hag first expressed disappointment that the player is leaving and happiness that the midfielder has had such a good reception in Italy already.

But the Dutchman also stuck the boot in on spending rules that ultimately incentivise clubs to sell their homegrown players.

He was here for over 22 years. Unfortunately, it’s the rules. We have to discuss the rules when you have to do sales and then, obviously, homegrown players, Academy players, they bring more value. That’s not the right thing to do, but yeah, I think for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal.

“For Scott, he’s happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player. But also for us.”

Chelsea still in the race for Victor Osimhen

There have been many reports on the Victor Osimhen story in the last 24-48 hours, but some of these are, from what I’m hearing, not 100% accurate, so I wanted to clear that up here.

First of all, if you’ve been following me on here, you’ll know I always said Osimhen was going to be something for the final days of the window. The only club that had the chance to change this was Paris Saint-Germain back in July – they had an agreement with Osimhen back then, but then everything collapsed.

Then, in August, Napoli and Chelsea started to talk about Osimhen, as well as Romelu Lukaku and these kind of things. I always said that Osimhen would not go on loan – it would have to be a permanent transfer or a loan with obligation. So, now we’re at the final days, what’s going on?

Al Ahli have a delegation in Italy to meet with Napoli and the agent of Osimhen. Meanwhile, Chelsea are still talking with Osimhen and his agent – they are still in a negotiation for Osimhen, as of late last night.

Al Ahli have presented a very important proposal to Osimhen, worth €25-30m per season for the next four years. It’s not true that the player doesn’t want to go to Saudi. He’s never said no to Saudi, he’s never rejected them, despite the statement from his agent. Al Ahli never gave up on this deal, they are still there.

The most important thing for Osimhen, however, is a release clause. He always wanted a release clause with Al Ahli and they have accepted this. They have basically given Osimhen everything he wants – everything is on the table for Osimhen to go to Saudi, and talks are also taking place with Napoli.

But it’s important to say that Chelsea are still not giving up on this deal. Osimhen is still talking to Chelsea and waiting to see if they can reach an agreement – he is giving them a chance, and forget any stories about deadlines, it’s the final two days of the window so it’s obvious that there is not much time to get this done and the next 24 hours will be important, but there is no deadline being set by Osimhen.

Victor Osimhen to Chelsea?

So, now it’s important to see if Chelsea can make it happen on the salary point of view and the transfer fee point of view. They have a chance because Al Ahli have made Osimhen exactly the proposal he wants, but he’s still waiting, and it’s on Chelsea to reach an agreement, or he’ll be ready to go to Saudi. It’s not easy for Chelsea to compete with the kind of money the Saudis can offer, but they are really making an effort.

Jhon Duran also remains super appreciated by Enzo Maresca and people at Chelsea, but it looks really complicated now because Aston Villa would need to sign a replacement and there’s not much time left. Ivan Toney could be an opportunity for the final hours, because if Chelsea or other clubs who are interested in a striker find that other strikers are not available, then Toney is there. But as of last night, Chelsea are still trying to find a way for Osimhen.

One in, one out in midfield for Manchester United, plus truth about those Ben Chilwell links

Scott McTominay will be in Napoli today, ready for his medical tests and contract signing. Manchester United will receive €30.5m and a 10% sell-on clause – it’s 100% confirmed. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte is coming in at Man United and has been in Manchester already for the formal steps.

Rio Ferdinand has spoken out to warn United about selling McTominay and I can see what he means, even if it’s not an easy situation. The player wanted to play regularly, Napoli can offer that. But I agree with Rio when he says that Scott is probably an underrated, important player and I really rate him. It’s a fantastic signing for Napoli; but for United it was the only way to get the green light on the Ugarte deal.

I also wanted to clarify some further Man United transfer rumours about Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell. We’ve heard this story a few times, but my understanding is that there are no talks, no negotiations have taken place. United are not looking to sign Chilwell, it’s not happening.

Stefan Bajcetic saga and the truth about Darwin Nunez transfer speculation

I wanted to clarify the situation with Stefan Bajcetic as it’s been an important few hours at Liverpool. Firstly, everything was agreed for Bajcetic to move on loan to Red Bull Salzburg, but then Barcelona called and presented Liverpool with a proposal for a loan. It was a €4m loan fee, with no buy option or obligation, and Barca also called the player to try to persuade him.

So, what happened? While Barcelona tried to make this deal happen, they also had big issues with Financial Fair Play, so it was an issue for them to get the green light from La Liga. They spent all day trying to find a way with La Liga, but as of now, still nothing has been approved, so the expectation of the agents of the player, and of Salzburg and of Liverpool and all parties involved, is for Bajcetic to travel tomorrow to Salzburg and complete his move there.

Pep Lijnders, the Salzburg manager and former assistant of Jurgen Klopp, has been calling Bajcetic all day long – he’s been fighting to get the player and to present the project to him in the best way possible. Salzburg are now confident of getting it done.

Staying with Liverpool, I also wanted to say something on Darwin Nunez after some surprise stories about Arsenal. I don’t know where this has come from, but I’ve had many questions about this and so I spoke to some of my sources, and I can honestly say there is nothing.

In general, it’s also not true that Nunez is pushing to leave Liverpool – it’s important to clarify that he is absolutely not planning to leave Liverpool, I can guarantee this. He is really focused on Liverpool and really happy with Arne Slot. Of course it will be an important season for him, but it’s never been a possibility for him to leave this summer and he never asked to go.

As reported yesterday, it’s ‘here we go’ for Federico Chiesa to Liverpool, and I also wanted to clarify that Barcelona never made any bid for the player. It was never anything concrete, and in the end Liverpool moved really fast, though they had also been thinking of Chiesa for a long time. Richard Hughes knows Italian football really well, and he knew Chiesa was a fantastic opportunity.

He’s a player who’s been unlucky with injuries, but I think it’s also important to say that he was unlucky to be at Juventus under a manager like Massimiliano Allegri, who was playing a style of football that was not a good fit for a player like Chiesa. If you look at how Liverpool play, it looks like a very good deal.

Arsenal continue to do well with player sales, but Jakub Kiwior is staying

Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton is a ‘here we go’. The goalkeeper will have his medical today as he’s set to join for a £25m package. And remember that Arsenal have been prepared to go for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia in order to replace Ramsdale.

He was in the list of Wolves and Bournemouth but they both didn’t want to invest £25m on a GK, Southampton yes and it was quite fast. I think it was a good summer for Arsenal especially on sales, Edu did an important job. It’s never easy to sell players.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have told Jakub Kiwior and his agents two days ago that he has to stay as he’s going to be an important player for them this season. Kiwior was never desperate to leave – he rejected approaches from Premier League and he was only open to returning to Italy, but it was never close.

There have been plenty of stories about a possible Reiss Nelson exit as well, but it depends on proposals, and while I’m writing there is still nothing close on this one.

In other news…

Trevoh Chalobah – Chelsea are still trying to find a solution for Trevoh Chalobah, and his agents too. It’s an open story ahead of the final 48 hours. There’s no lack of suitors but Chelsea have been asking for a permanent move for £30m and it’s difficult for many clubs to invest this kind of money.

Matheus Nunes – Despite rumours, there is nothing concrete into this one as far as I’m aware. Manchester City have not received any bid for Matheus Nunes so far, and my information is that Atletico Madrid can only do a loan which is probably leading them to different candidates.

Rayan Cherki – There is no major update on Cherki now, the situation is open. He’s not interested in a move to Fulham despite some recent reports, and I would not be surprised if he ends up staying at Lyon. PSG were never back in the race in August, it was a fake story.

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has stated his view that Manchester United have had to let an underrated and important player leave in order to be able to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano made it clear that he agrees with Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand, who recently warned his old club about selling Scott McTominay.

McTominay is set to join Napoli, and Romano has suggested it was something United had to do, rather than necessarily being something ideal for the club to be doing, as he rates the Scotland international highly.

Ferdinand made it clear that top clubs like United need reliable squad players like McTominay, and he should know a thing or two about that as he cited unsung heroes from his time at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay in action for Manchester United

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “I look at Scott McTominay and not every player can be a star, a standout player. But to win the league you need the likes of John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher.

“With McTominay you know what you’re getting. He might not always be a 9/10 but invariably he’s a solid 7/10 and sometimes he will be an 8/10 and get you a goal.”

McTominay transfer: Romano on Man Utd star’s move to Napoli

Romano echoed those sentiments, but also praised Napoli for getting a quality signing, whilst admitting it would probably be a good move for the 27-year-old as the Serie A giants can offer him more playing time.

“The player wanted to play regularly, Napoli can offer that. But I agree with Rio when he says that Scott is probably underrated, important player and I really rate him,” Romano said.

“It’s a fantastic signing for Napoli; but for United it was the only way to get the green light on the Ugarte deal.”

MUFC fans will no doubt wish McTominay the best in his new adventure in Italy, but it will be interesting to see if this ends up being a sale the club lives to regret.
