Newcastle United have started the season well despite their underwhelming transfer window.

The Magpies needed big reinforcement to the squad after suffering an injury crisis last season which resulted in their seventh placed finish in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s team have won twice and drawn once in their first three matches of the season.

They chased Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi all summer but failed to complete his signing in the end.

Guehi has been a star performer for England and at Euro 2024, he was one of their best players.

The player was involved in England’s latest match against Ireland and his performance impressed Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

Shearer said on The Rest is Football:

“He looked good, didn’t he? I thought his passing was really good as well.

“I thought when you are fizzing it into the midfield when you have got to get through and break the line, I thought some of his passing was superb. Didn’t have to defend that much, but I thought when you are on the ball and you have got possession, then you need someone and I thought he was really good at that, yeah.”

There is no question about the quality of Guehi and the Eagles would most likely lose him next year in a big money move.

They will not mind that since they will be pocketing a huge sum, just like they did with the sale of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich.

Newcastle are expected to return for Guehi either in January or next summer as Eddie Howe still retains an interest in the player.

Newcastle United failed with multiple offers to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, they are set to resurrect their interest in the 24-year-old central defender in January. Newcastle are looking to sign him in a cut-price deal.

The Eagles were demanding £75 million for the defender in the summer and it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to let him leave for a more reasonable price in January. The defender will have 18 months left on his deal in January and Crystal Palace might have to be more realistic with their demands.

He has established himself as a top-class defender in the Premier League and a number of clubs are keeping tabs on him. Crystal Palace will not want to lose him on a free transfer in 2026, and therefore it would make sense for them to cash in on him prior to that.

Newcastle to return for Marc Guehi in January.
Newcastle failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer despite submitting multiple bids.

Marc Guehi will fancy Newcastle move

The defender is keen on competing at a high level and it is fair to resume that he is unlikely to sign an extension with the Eagles. The opportunity to join Newcastle could be quite attractive for him. They have an ambitious project and the resources to sign top quality players. He will want to be a part of their revolution and he will look to win trophies with them.

Newcastle need a top class central defender in order to push for trophies and return to the UEFA Champions League. The former Chelsea academy graduate has the ability to transform Newcastle defensively, and he could be a key player for them during the second half of the season.

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Newcastle United were keen on signing the Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies failed with multiple offers to sign the 24-year-old England international and former Everton chief Keith Wyness has now revealed that the new leadership group at Newcastle failed to get the deal done.

Wyness explained that the PSR regulations had nothing to do with the failed move for Guehi and the likes of Amanda Staveley would have secured the move for Newcastle.

Wyness told Football Insider: “I don’t think it was PSR which prevented the Guehi deal going through. I was convinced this deal would go through.

“Where I think Newcastle went wrong was the new leadership group at the club.

“Amanda Staveley and her husband had amazing negotiation skills, and I don’t think the new group coming in have managed to get it over the line. That’s my opinion.

“I think it was more a problem on the Newcastle side, handling Steve Parish and Crystal Palace, more than a problem with finances.

“I don’t think PSR is the villain in this issue. Newcastle will regret not getting this Guehi deal done.”

The Magpies needed a quality central defender this summer and Guehi would have improved them immensely. The 24-year-old is certainly one of the best defenders in the league and he could have been the ideal long-term partner for Sven Botman. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle decide to return for him in the near future.

There is no doubt that the 24-year-old is good enough to play for the biggest clubs in the country and a move to Newcastle will be quite attractive for him. They have an ambitious project and the resources to build a formidable squad. The 24-year-old will look to push for major trophies with them in the coming seasons.

Newcastle looked vulnerable at the back last season and they need to improve defensively if they want to challenge for trophies this season and return to the UEFA Champions League. They have signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer and it will be interesting to see if they can succeed this season.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been linked with a move away from the club this summer.

Newcastle United were very keen on securing his signature and they failed with multiple offers for the 24-year-old England international. However, a report from the Sun claims that Manchester City are now keeping tabs on his progress and they could look to make a move for him in the near future.

The Premier League champions could use more depth at the heart of the defence and he would be a solid acquisition for them. The 24-year-old will look to prove himself at the highest level and the opportunity to move to Manchester City will be quite attractive for him. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and they have a proven track record of winning major trophies consistently.

The England international will be attracted to the idea of playing for them next season. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

Guehi is unlikely to be a cheap acquisition and the Eagles will demand a premium for him. He has a contract with them until 2026, and it remains to be seen whether they can convince the player to sign an extension with the club.

Man City to move for Marc Guehi next summer?

If Crystal Palace fail to convince him to sign a new deal, Manchester City could look to move for him in the summer of 2025. The Eagles will be under pressure to sell him then, and they will not want to lose him on a free transfer in 2026. The England international could be available for a cut price deal in 2025.

Manchester City are unlikely to be the only club keen on signing him next summer and they are likely to face competition from other Premier League rivals. It will be interesting to see where the 24-year-old ends up.

Newcastle United failed to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the summer.

The Magpies identified the England international as a top transfer target, but despite making the Eagles three offers, came up short in their efforts to sign him.

Newcastle’s highest offer for the 24-year-old was in excess of £65 million but that figure still fell short of Steve Parish’s £75 million valuation. Consequently, Guehi stayed at Selhurst Park and is now, as the side’s captain, focusing on performing to the best of his ability.

Marc Guehi next Crystal Palace contract to include clause

However, even though the defender wants his football to do the talking, according to a recent report from Football Insider, Palace are keen to open contract talks.

Marc Guehi wants a clause included in his next Crystal Palace contract.
Newcastle failed to sign Marc Guehi this summer despite making three bids.

Guehi has two years left on his current contract, and even though he is open to discussing new terms, wants a release clause included in any future deal.

Although Palace are likely to include a clause of at least £75 million, the fact the player wants one in place could be good news for Newcastle ahead of them revisiting the possibility of signing the defender in future windows.

The Geordies’ failed pursuit meant they experienced a disappointing summer with William Osula, Lloyd Kelly and goalkeeping duo Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy their only signings.

Newcastle United had an underwhelming summer transfer window when at first it looked like they will make a number of new additions to their squad.

The Magpies added players in their defense and the goalkeeping position but they failed to add more depth to their squad, which was much needed after their injury crisis last season.

They failed in their attempts to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and if they are planning to target him in the future, it is set to get more difficult for them to sign the English defender.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City have entered the race to sign the centre-back, who was one of England’s best players at Euro 2024 this summer.

Pep Guardiola’s team are monitoring the former Chelsea defender and the Magpies could face competition from the Premier League champions to sign the talented defender.

Eddie Howe’s team were so desperate to sign Guehi that they submitted four bids for the centre-back but all of them were rejected by the south Londoners.

The Magpies finally accepted defeat in their pursuit to sign the defender but they are expected to return for him in the future as the player was also keen to join them this summer.

Man City enter race to sign Newcastle United target Marc Guehi.

However, Man City might have other ideas, who could target a move for the Palace defender in two year’s time, when his contract expires at Selhurst Park.

Guehi’s contract at the club will expire in 2026 and the defender has no intention of signing a new deal.

Newcastle will face competition from Man City for Marc Guehi

His availability as a free agent is likely to attract Man City, who are keen on bringing the defender to the Etihad Stadium.

The defender’s decision not to sign a new deal at the club has put Palace in a difficult position.

Either they will have to convince the defender to extend his contract or sell him for a cut-price fee in January 2025 or next summer.

Palace’s stubbornness to sell the defender this summer might prove costly for them and Man City are ready to take advantage of the situation.

Newcastle sporting Director Paul Mitchell has opened up on the club’s failed pursuit of Marc Guehi and admitted in future their focus in the transfer market wouldn’t be so “narrow.”

The Magpies had a frustrating summer and were unable to make what would be described as a marquee signing. despite making it clear Crystal Palace star Guehi was their main target.

Eddie Howe’s side tried all summer to agree a deal with the Eagles but were unable to after having four bids rejected.

Mitchell opens up on failed Guehi pursuit

Newcastle fans were understandably frustrated that the club were unable to complete a deal for Guehi, and with how public the whole sage was it doesn’t reflect particularly well on the Magpies.

Inews reported that Newcastle’s final bid for Guehi actually went in a couple of weeks before deadline day but conversations continued towards the end of the window, with the Magpies determined not to pay over the odds.

Mitchell is new in the job having replaced Dan Ashworth who left for Manchester United and whilst he didn’t directly name Guehi he spoke on how Newcastle can’t just keep spending.

“As custodians of this club we can’t just keep spending, spending because at some point that won’t enable the club to facilitate its goals and I don’t think any Newcastle fan wants to see this club in a place where other clubs were last season with docked points, with financial penalties because that can really affect our growth,” he said.

Marc Guehi in action for Crystal Palace.
Newcastle had four bids rejected for Guehi his summer.

Mitchell also opened up how there has to be a point where you accept you aren’t going to over pay and move on to other targets.

“Is there a point of value for every single player and did maybe this football club need to draw a line in the sand of ‘we’re not going to overpay?’,” he added.

“Probably looking at the players we have signed, and we’ve signed some really good players, could we say that some of those players potentially cost more money than they should have done in the market at that current context? You probably could have that argument and discussion.

“For this club to come out and say actually, we really liked this player and thought he could  bring benefit to this squad but it is at any cost? Is it at financial risk to the organisation and our growth and our plan? I don’t think we should do that.”

The sporting director also revealed Newcastle wouldn’t be so narrow minded when when it comes to future windows.

“You can be on multiple deals at any one time, the focus doesn’t have to be that narrow,” he said.

“We probably were too narrow, but coming in in mid-July, it’s not my strategy to control. It’s my strategy to support.”

Newcastle failed in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer.

They were strongly linked with the Englishman and tried to sign him all summer, seeing 4 bids getting rejected by the Eagles, their fourth being worth £65m, which fell short of Palace’s £70m valuation of the player.

It was reported that the Magpies will return with another bid for Guehi but in the end, the window closed with the clubs failing to reach an agreement on the fee.

However, as per the latest from The Telegraph, Newcastle have not given up on signing him and will ‘almost certain’ return with fresh efforts in the January transfer window.

The report claims that new sporting director Paul Mitchell is personally keen on signing the player and that there will be money to splash in the new year for the Magpies.

Crystal Palace chairman’s latest comments a boost for Newcastle

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that he will be proud of selling his star players to top clubs like Newcastle.

Speaking to the Sky Sports, he said:

“We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who’ve got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League.

“So we have to manage all of those things. We won’t get really great young talent to come to us if they think they’re going to be stuck.”

“We want to be playing in the Champions League. The reality is we don’t right now. That’s what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we’re going to be a pathway to that.”

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has revealed he actively wants to sell players to clubs of the stature of Newcastle United.

The Magpies spent most of the summer chasing Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi, but were ultimately thwarted and unable to agree on a fee.

However, Palace did agree to other high-profile sales, most notably allowing French playmaker Michael Olise to make a big move to German giants Bayern Munich.

Although safe at Selhurst Park for now, Parish knows he faces an uphill battle to keep the likes of Guehi and Eberechi Eze around long-term.

In fact, the Palace chairman has openly admitted he is ‘proud’ to sell star players to bigger clubs, openly namedropping Newcastle in the process.

Crystal Palace want to tie one of their most consistent performers down on a new contract.

Tyrick Mitchell, 25, is in the final year of his contract but remains an ever-present figure in Olivier Glasner’s side.

The 25-year-old has played every minute for his manager so far this season, and keen to reflect his importance, Palace, according to Football Insider, want to tie him down on fresh terms.

Crystal Palace set for Tyrick Mitchell contract talks

Mitchell came through Palace’s youth academy and was eventually promoted to the first team in 2020. His reliable and consistent performances, as well as his solid record with injuries, has seen him recently linked with a high-profile move to Manchester United.

Tyrick Mitchell is preparing for contract talks with Crystal Palace.

Consequently, keen to fend off interest in his number three, chairman Steve Parish wants the club to offer the full-back a new, and presumably improved, contract.

Mitchell’s current deal sees him earn £40,000-per week (Spotrac), so it is fair to say he will be in line for a significant pay rise should he reach an agreement with the club.

The same applies to Marc Guehi. The centre-back was a top target for Newcastle United throughout the summer window, but despite making a third offer worth £65 million, the Magpies failed to lure the defender away from Selhurst Park. The 24-year-old is also preparing to hold contract talks with Palace.
